2323 Earl: A Backyard Writing Studio Inspired

by Mid-Century Hi-Fi Design.

Perched high above the Silver Lake Reservoir, Shed Quarters was designed as a writing studio for a Grammy-winning composer. The project began with a contradiction: recording studios typically favor sealed rooms, limited glazing, and technical performance above all else, while creative work thrives on daylight, views, and a connection to the outside world.

Rather than treating these competing requirements as obstacles, the project uses them as its organizing principle. Conceived as a modern treehouse suspended above the hillside, the compact studio balances professional acoustic performance with a sense of openness and retreat.

Drawing from decades-old acoustic principles while avoiding many of the visual clichés associated with traditional recording studios, the building combines high-performance acoustic assemblies with an architecture centered on daylight, proportion, and calm. A continuous band of clerestory windows introduces natural light and frames the surrounding tree canopy while maintaining the acoustic isolation required for recording and composition.

Custom built-in furniture, integrated acoustic treatments, and carefully considered proportions allow the compact structure to function as a professional creative workspace while feeling more like a small piece of architecture than a technical enclosure.

The result is a studio designed not simply to isolate sound, but to support the creative process itself.
